How Often Should You Use LED Therapy for Best Results?

One of the most common questions I get from people who are new to LED light therapy is: "How often should I use it?" It is a great question — because consistency is everything with LED therapy. Too little and you will not see results. Too much and you may be wasting time without additional benefit. Let me give you the evidence-based answer.

The Short Answer

For most people, 3 to 5 sessions per week of 10–20 minutes each is the optimal frequency for at-home LED therapy. Daily use is also safe and can accelerate results, particularly in the first 4–8 weeks.

Why Consistency Matters More Than Intensity

LED therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation — light energy stimulates cellular activity, which triggers collagen production, reduces inflammation, and accelerates repair. These are biological processes that take time to accumulate and compound.

Think of it like exercise: one intense session per month will not build muscle. But consistent, moderate sessions several times a week will produce measurable results over time. The same principle applies to LED therapy.

Recommended Treatment Schedule by Goal

Anti-Ageing (Fine Lines, Wrinkles, Firmness)

  • Frequency: 4–5 sessions per week
  • Session length: 15–20 minutes
  • Wavelength: Red (630–700nm) and/or Near-Infrared (800–900nm)
  • Timeline to results: 8–12 weeks of consistent use

Acne Reduction

  • Frequency: 3–5 sessions per week
  • Session length: 10–15 minutes
  • Wavelength: Blue (415–450nm), optionally combined with red
  • Timeline to results: 4–8 weeks

General Skin Health and Maintenance

  • Frequency: 2–3 sessions per week
  • Session length: 10–15 minutes
  • Wavelength: Red or multi-wavelength
  • Timeline to results: Ongoing maintenance; skin quality improves progressively

The Treatment Phases: Intensive vs Maintenance

I recommend thinking about LED therapy in two phases:

Phase 1 — Intensive (Weeks 1–8): Use 4–5 times per week to build up collagen stimulation and establish the biological cascade. This is when the most significant changes occur.

Phase 2 — Maintenance (Week 9 onwards): Once you have achieved your desired results, you can reduce to 2–3 sessions per week to maintain them. Think of this as your long-term skincare investment.

Can You Use LED Therapy Every Day?

Yes — daily use is safe. Unlike some active skincare ingredients (such as retinol or chemical exfoliants), LED therapy does not cause cumulative irritation or damage with daily use. If your schedule allows, daily sessions during the intensive phase will accelerate your results.

What Time of Day Is Best?

There is no clinically proven optimal time of day for LED therapy. However, many users — and I personally recommend — using it in the evening as part of your skincare routine, for two reasons:

  1. LED therapy temporarily increases skin permeability, making it an ideal time to apply serums and moisturisers immediately after — absorption is enhanced
  2. Evening use fits naturally into a wind-down routine, making consistency easier to maintain

What to Do Immediately After a Session

To maximise the benefits of each session:

  • Apply a high-quality serum immediately after — hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, or peptide serums absorb particularly well post-LED
  • Follow with your regular moisturiser
  • Apply SPF if treating in the morning

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I miss a few sessions?

Missing occasional sessions will not undo your progress. Simply resume your regular schedule. Consistency over weeks and months matters far more than perfection in any given week.

Can I use LED therapy twice a day?

There is no evidence that twice-daily sessions provide additional benefit over once-daily use. Once per day is sufficient — more frequent sessions in a single day are unlikely to cause harm but are also unlikely to accelerate results.

How long do results last?

Results from LED therapy are maintained with ongoing use. If you stop completely, the skin will gradually return to its baseline over several months. This is why transitioning to a maintenance schedule (rather than stopping entirely) is recommended.
